TCN Starts Reconstruction of Collapsed Power Towers on Kainji–Birnin Kebbi Line

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has started work on rebuilding three power transmission towers that recently collapsed along the 330kV Kainji–Birnin Kebbi line. This move is part of the company’s effort to restore electricity supply to affected areas in the northwest region of the country.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Ndidi Mbah, the General Manager of Public Affairs at TCN, shared that the company has already sent three different contractors to the location where the towers went down.

Each contractor has been given the responsibility to rebuild one of the towers. Mbah noted that using multiple contractors will help speed up the repair process and ensure the power line is fixed in the shortest possible time.

“To mitigate the impact of the outage on Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (Kaduna Electric) and its customers, alternative supply routes have been activated,” she said.

According to the statement, some areas that depend on the affected power line — including Sokoto and Birnin Kebbi — are still getting some electricity through a backup 132kV line.

This line runs from the Mando Transmission Substation and connects several towns, such as Zaria, Funtua, Gusau, Talata Mafara, and Sokoto, before reaching Birnin Kebbi. However, the supply through this route is limited, with each of the affected states receiving only between 6 and 7 megawatts of power.

Mbah noted that TCN engineers are working closely with the contractors to ensure the new towers are built properly and quickly. She also appreciated the patience shown by residents in the impacted communities during this time.

“TCN appreciates the patience and understanding of the affected communities as contractors work assiduously alongside our supervising engineers to rebuild the towers and restring the 330kV line,” Mbah stated. “We regret the inconvenience caused and remain committed to restoring full supply as quickly as possible.”
