Flood Sweeps Away Lagos Motorcyclist, Body Found in Ogun River After Search

The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the tragic death of a 60-year-old commercial motorcyclist, Wasiu Babatunde Adeniran, who was swept away by a fast-moving flood during a heavy downpour in the Alakuko area, along the busy Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

According to a statement released on Thursday, May 22, 2025, by the command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the incident took place two days earlier, on Tuesday, May 20, at approximately 4:00 p.m. The heavy rainfall led to widespread flooding in the area, which posed significant danger to road users.

Adeniran, who was riding through the area during the rain, reportedly lost control of his motorcycle. Both he and his bike were carried away by the strong floodwaters.

“The unfortunate incident took place along Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Alakuko, during heavy rainfall,” Hundeyin stated. “The victim, Wasiu Babatunde Adeniran, fell off his motorcycle, which was also carried away by the flood.”

Following the incident, rescue efforts began immediately, and a search party was dispatched to the area. Around 6:00 p.m. that same evening, Adeniran’s motorcycle was found downstream, but the man himself remained missing.

The police worked with local residents and emergency personnel in an extended search operation.

Tragically, the lifeless body of Adeniran was later discovered in a section of the Ogun River, some distance from where he initially went missing. Authorities transported the body to a mortuary, where it will undergo further procedures.

SP Hundeyin noted that the police are still investigating the exact sequence of events and advised residents to be cautious during heavy rainfalls. He also called on Lagosians to avoid flood-prone areas when it rains.
