Reps Hold Valedictory Session to Honour Fallen Members Tuesday

The House of Representatives will dedicate its sitting on Tuesday to a special session in memory of some of its members who died while serving in the 10th Assembly. This was revealed in a statement issued by Akin Rotimi, the House spokesperson, on Monday.

The event is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. in the Green Chamber of the National Assembly Complex in Abuja. It is listed in the official notice paper for the week by the House Committee on Rules and Business, chaired by Francis Waive.

This session comes as a moment of reflection and tribute for the lawmakers who passed away during their term in office. Speaker Tajudeen Abbas will lead the special session alongside other top-ranking officers of the House.

Among the lawmakers being honoured is Adewunmi Onanuga, the former Deputy Chief Whip who represented Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency in Ogun State. She died in January 2025.

Another is Abdulkadir Danbuga of the Isa/Sabon Birni Federal Constituency, Sokoto State, who passed away in October 2023.

Isa Dogonyaro, who represented Garki/Babura Federal Constituency in Jigawa State, died in May 2024. Olaide Akinremi from Ibadan North Federal Constituency, Oyo State, passed in July 2024. Ekene Adams of the Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency in Kaduna State also died that same month.

According to Rotimi’s statement, “The families of these lawmakers, alongside other dignitaries, are expected to attend.”

The sitting will include tributes, personal remarks, and ceremonial acts such as moments of silence. These rites follow longstanding parliamentary customs to show respect and gratitude for the late members’ service.

As shared in the agenda circulated to members by the Clerk of the House, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, tributes will be led by the Speaker and senior members, followed by remarks from fellow lawmakers, political leaders, and invited guests.

Rotimi noted, “Each of these late members made lasting contributions to the 10th House through motions, bills, oversight, and constituency engagement. Their voices helped shape debates and the legislative agenda within committees, caucuses, and plenary.”

He further noted that their deaths are not just individual losses, but institutional ones that remind all lawmakers of the responsibilities they carry and the importance of their roles in national development.

The session also comes as the 10th Assembly nears its halfway point in June 2025. It serves as both a tribute and a time for lawmakers to renew their commitment to public service.
