Political and public affairs analyst, Mojeed Dahiru, has said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may not survive much longer due to what he called a “mortal sin” committed during the 2023 presidential election.
Speaking during a recent appearance on Channels Television, Dahiru shared his views on the worsening state of opposition politics in Nigeria, with particular focus on the PDP’s ongoing internal crisis. He was reacting to recent developments within the party, including a meeting held by PDP stakeholders in Abuja which ended without meaningful progress.
The gathering in Abuja was meant to resolve differences and revive the party, but according to Dahiru, it only exposed deeper divisions. In his words: “The PDP is a dying party. You see, the Bible says the wages of sin is death. So the PDP is dying because it committed a mortal sin in 2023 and I cannot say this enough.”
Dahiru explained that the party’s failure to respect its zoning agreement by fielding a northern presidential candidate in 2023 was a critical mistake. He noted that this decision alienated the southern part of the country, which had been a loyal support base for the party for many years.
“When the PDP jettison zoning prior to the 2023 president election, when it was supposed to seed the ticket to the South… the PDP committed a mortal sin,” he said.
He also laid much of the blame on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, suggesting that Atiku’s candidacy introduced a deep-rooted crisis in the PDP. “It was Atiku submission that killed the PDP effectively,” Dahiru noted.
Dahiru painted a grim picture for the future of the party, claiming that it is already on its way out of Nigeria’s political space. “I don’t see PDP surviving as a party beyond 2027,” he said.
On the role of former Rivers State governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, Dahiru said Wike’s actions are a result of earlier decisions made by the party’s northern leaders. “Wike would not have intended to be an undertaker… but you see, there are causes and effects,” Dahiru stated.
He noted that what is happening now within the PDP is a result of past choices, and warned that the combination of these internal issues may ultimately lead to the party’s collapse.
“So these actions and inactions will invariably lead to the final burial of the PDP,” Dahiru concluded.
