Oyo, Osun Customs Raised N25.7bn in Three Months — Controller Joseph Adelaja

Customs Area Controller for Oyo and Osun, Comptroller Joseph Adelaja, has reported that the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in the region recorded a total revenue of ₦25.7 billion between March and May 2025.

Adelaja made this known during a press briefing held at the command’s operational base in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, on Tuesday. He noted that the amount generated marked a significant increase of over ₦7.6 billion compared to the same period in 2024.

At that time, the revenue collected was approximately ₦18.1 billion. This improvement, he said, shows a 36.67% rise in revenue generation within one year.

According to Adelaja, the achievement is linked to several key factors, including the strong commitment of officers and men in the command, stricter enforcement of customs regulations, and the use of updated trade facilitation procedures. These changes, he said, have helped boost legal trade and reduce the risk of revenue loss.

“The implementation of modern trade facilitation tools has enhanced compliance among excise stakeholders, ensuring that revenue leakages are effectively reduced and, in turn, plays a vital role in the Federal Government’s economic reforms and supports the national development,” Adelaja stated.

He also shared details about recent anti-smuggling operations conducted by the command, revealing that in May 2025 alone, seized items reached a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of ₦335.6 million.

Among the intercepted goods were 310 used compressors cleverly hidden inside apple cartons, with a DPV of ₦9.3 million. Other items include 1,698 bags of 50kg foreign parboiled rice valued at ₦153.78 million, and 130 kegs (25 litres each) of Premium Motor Spirit worth ₦3.25 million.

Also confiscated were 21 drums of 125-litre fuel (₦3.15 million), 226 used tyres (₦18.08 million), 67 sacks and 37 bales of second-hand clothes (₦66.84 million), 130 wraps of clothes (₦26 million), and four sacks of used shoes (₦3.36 million). The command also seized 68 wraps (39kg) of Cannabis Sativa with a DPV of ₦1.23 million.

On counterfeit drugs, Adelaja reported the interception of 10 cartons of Everzorol Cream 20gm (₦4.5 million), 5 cartons of Zytocin Oxytocin (₦1.8 million), 27 cartons of Phinimal Arteether Injection (₦12.96 million), 10 cartons of Areechy Zinc Sulphate (₦15 million), 16 cartons of Biovilo 13.125mg (₦2.4 million), as well as a white Mazda bus and a blue Toyota Sienna with a combined value of ₦14 million.

The comptroller noted that the seized drugs and cannabis would be handed over to the appropriate authorities: the NDLEA and NAFDAC, respectively, for further examination and legal action.

Adelaja expressed gratitude to the Comptroller General of Customs, BA Adeniyi, along with his leadership team, for their guidance and backing. He also thanked Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, local traditional rulers in Oyo and Osun, and sister security agencies for their ongoing support in the region.
