Enugu Governor Vows to Honour Late Highlife Legend Mike Ejeagha

The Enugu State Government, on Saturday, mourned the passing of one of Nigeria’s most treasured music icons, Gentleman Mike Ejeagha, and pledged to preserve his legacy for future generations.

Mike Ejeagha, known for his distinctive blend of storytelling and highlife music, died on Friday after a lifetime devoted to promoting Igbo folklore through song. News of his death stirred emotion across Nigeria and beyond, as fans, cultural advocates, and fellow musicians paid tribute to a man whose voice had become a cultural treasure.

Governor Peter Mbah shared his sorrow in a heartfelt post on his verified X account, where he praised the legendary musician for his artistic brilliance and cultural influence.

“Mike Ejeagha was a legend, a cultural ambassador, and a revered son of Enugu State,” the governor said. “He was one of the finest musicians of his generation, with an easygoing personality and a humility that belied his towering celebrity status.”

Governor Mbah noted the powerful way Ejeagha turned everyday folktales into timeless songs. He described the musician’s work as a bridge between generations and cultures, reflecting the values, humor, and wisdom of the Igbo people.

“Ejeagha’s immense talent and genius lay in how he took simple indigenous folktales and turned them into unforgettable songs that resonate across cultures,” he wrote.

The governor stated that the loss was not only a blow to Ejeagha’s family but also a deep wound for the people of Enugu, the Nigerian music industry, and the entire country.

“His death leaves a huge void that will be difficult to fill. But the legacies he has left behind will last a lifetime,” he noted.

Governor Mbah extended the condolences of the state government to the Ejeagha family, offering them strength and support during their time of grief. He assured them that steps would be taken to ensure that the music legend’s memory is permanently preserved.

“The state government would ensure that the memory of the music legend is ‘duly immortalised,’” Mbah pledged.

He concluded his message with a prayer: “Above all, I pray that his family experiences the comforting grace of God’s love, and the fortitude to bear the loss. Rest in peace, Gentleman Mike Ejeagha.”
