Ojude Oba Celebration: ‘We’ll Safeguard Our Cultural Treasure,’ says Ogun Governor

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has shared his joy and pride over attending the 2025 Ojude Oba Festival held in Ijebu Ode. The governor called the event a long-standing show of cultural pride, community spirit, and lasting respect for the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona.

Speaking on Sunday, Governor Abiodun described the yearly gathering as one of the finest examples of unity among the Ijebu people. The celebration draws visitors and indigenes from both Nigeria and abroad, all coming to honour their heritage and show their respect to the royal seat of Ijebuland.

He wrote, “As proud sons and daughters of Ijebuland, we were deeply honoured to partake in this year’s Ojúde Ọba Festival—a timeless celebration of our heritage, unity, and unwavering loyalty to the revered throne of the Awujale.”

According to Abiodun, his presence at the event was not just formal but a personal reflection of his deep ties to the culture. He described the traditional attire worn by him and his entourage as carefully selected. Each piece—flowing agbádá, matching fila, and coral beads—was chosen to reflect dignity, cultural pride, and respect for the tradition of the Ijebu people.

He noted that their dressing was a “declaration of identity—an expression of grace, tradition, and responsible leadership,” rather than a mere display of fashion.

While addressing the importance of the day, Governor Abiodun said standing in front of the Awujale and other cultural groups gave him a strong sense of belonging and connection to the deep roots of Ijebuland.

“As we stood before the Awujale, His Royal Majesty Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona, GCON, and the distinguished regberegbe groups, we felt the heartbeat of a culture that continues to inspire and unite generations,” he said.

He also shared his appreciation for the love and support shown by the people during the festival, saying their pride in the culture was clear and touching.

“We are truly grateful for the warmth and pride shown by our people.

“Together, we will continue to safeguard this vibrant heritage while building a prosperous and inclusive Ogun State that honours its past and embraces its future,” the governor added.

The Ojude Oba Festival remains one of the most colourful and highly attended cultural events in Nigeria. Celebrated by the Ijebu people in Ogun State, the festival is known for its elaborate traditional clothing, horse-riding displays by various age-grade groups, and the overall promotion of Yoruba culture.
