FG Declares June 12 Public Holiday to Mark Democracy Day

The Federal Government has declared Thursday, June 12, 2025, a public holiday to mark this year’s Democracy Day celebration.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the announcement on behalf of the government, congratulating Nigerians on 26 years of continuous civilian rule since the return of democracy in 1999.

The declaration was shared in a statement issued on Sunday by Magdalene Ajani, the Permanent Secretary of the Interior Ministry.

According to the statement, the Minister described June 12 as a significant date that represents Nigeria’s journey toward building a nation where truth, justice, and peace thrive.

“June 12 represents our historic journey to building a nation where truth and justice reign and peace is sustained and our future assured,” the statement quoted the minister as saying.

She noted that the past 26 years have shown Nigerians’ resilience and strength in maintaining democratic governance. “The last 26 years tells the story of our resilience, strength and courage and a hope Renewed than ever,” the statement added.
