Benue Police Still Investigating Death of 67-Year-Old French Tourist in Hotel Room

The Benue State Police Command says it has not arrested anyone in connection with the death of a 67-year-old French man, Pietier Gilles, who was found dead in a hotel room in Gboko town. The incident took place in Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State.

Reports say that Gilles checked into the unnamed hotel on Friday. He reportedly began to feel unwell the following day, Saturday. Sadly, before any doctor could attend to him, he passed away on Sunday at around 5:45 p.m.

The Police Public Relations Officer for the state command, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Udeme Edet, shared more details about the situation. She noted that the man came into the state as a tourist and was alone in his hotel room when he suddenly fell sick.

According to Edet, “He was a tourist who came to Benue State. Unfortunately, he was in his hotel room and took ill. And in the process of getting a Doctor to check him, he died in his room.

“He was taken to the hospital, where it was confirmed that he was already dead. His body has been deposited in the morgue, and further investigation is ongoing.”

She added that the police are treating it as a case of Sudden and Unnatural Death (SUD). The moment the police were informed, officers went to the scene and rushed the man to a hospital, but doctors could only confirm that he was already dead.

At the moment, no one has been arrested. The case has now been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for a more detailed probe.

DSP Edet also noted that an autopsy will be carried out to help determine the exact cause of the tourist’s death.
