You’re an Eminent Statesman, Journalism Icon – Tinubu Hails Uncle Sam at 90

President Bola Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to Prince Sam Amuka-Pemu, founder of Vanguard newspaper, who turned 90 on June 13, 2025. In a statement celebrating the veteran journalist, the President described him as a symbol of resilience, dedication, and national service.

Prince Sam Amuka-Pemu, widely known as Uncle Sam, began his journey in journalism at the Daily Times, where he carved out his early reputation. He later partnered with the late Chief Olu Aboderin to establish The Punch newspaper. After their paths separated, he went on to create Vanguard in 1984 — a newspaper that has become one of the most respected voices in Nigerian media.

President Tinubu noted the remarkable staying power of Vanguard, which has remained relevant and strong for over four decades under Uncle Sam’s leadership, despite challenges in the country’s media sector. According to him, this feat is a direct result of Amuka-Pemu’s visionary approach, strong principles, and deep commitment to the craft of journalism.

“Uncle Sam remains a shining example of dedication, resilience and integrity within the media industry,” the President said.

He also pointed out that Prince Amuka-Pemu’s influence goes beyond journalism. His leadership in Delta State and the wider South-South region has also earned him recognition as an elder statesman.

“Today, he is not just a leader of the profession; he is a doyen,” Tinubu said.

In acknowledgment of his lifetime contributions, President Tinubu said he recently conferred the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) on the media icon during the 2025 Democracy Day celebration. He noted this was in recognition of both his journalistic impact and his role in nation-building.

The President further called on young journalists to learn from Uncle Sam’s example, citing his integrity, persistence, and professionalism as essential qualities for success in the field.

“I wish Uncle Sam continued God’s grace and more years of impact. Our country is deeply grateful for his invaluable contributions to journalism and his enduring legacy,” Tinubu added.
