Messi’s Inter Miami Settle for 0-0 Draw Against Egypt’s Al Ahly in Club World Cup Opener

Lionel Messi and his Inter Miami teammates kicked off their FIFA Club World Cup campaign with a goalless draw against Egyptian giants Al Ahly in front of nearly 61,000 spectators at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Saturday, June 14.

The match opened the 32-team edition of the tournament and delivered high energy, tension, and drama—just without the goals. With fans from both sides creating a lively atmosphere, the game was anything but dull.

The best chance of the night came in added time when Messi’s trademark left-footed curler from the edge of the box seemed destined for the top corner. But Al Ahly’s goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy made a brilliant fingertip save, pushing the ball onto the crossbar and denying the Argentine legend a dream finish.

Earlier in the match, Al Ahly were awarded a penalty after Telasco Segovia brought down Zizo inside the box. Egypt international Trezeguet stepped up but failed to convert as Miami’s Argentine keeper Oscar Ustari guessed right and saved the low effort. Trezeguet couldn’t get to the rebound in time, and the chance was gone.

Al Ahly dominated much of the first half, with forward Wessam Abou Ali having a goal ruled out for offside and another powerful shot stopped by Ustari. Emam Ashour also saw a one-on-one opportunity blocked after a slick pass from Trezeguet sliced through the Miami defense.

Despite being second-best in the first 45 minutes, Miami grew into the game in the second half. Messi went close from a free-kick in the 64th minute, which hit the side netting and fooled many fans into thinking it had gone in.
