President Bola Tinubu has ordered Nigeria’s top security officers to take immediate action and arrest those responsible for the deadly attack in Yelewata, a town in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State. The attack, which happened last Friday, left over 100 people dead and has sparked widespread outrage across the country.
During a visit to Benue State on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, Tinubu met with local leaders, victims, and survivors of the tragedy. He also stopped at a hospital in Makurdi where he spoke to some of the injured. While addressing a town hall meeting, Tinubu gave a direct order to the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa.
“Christopher… We need to get our ears to the ground. Let’s get those criminals. Let’s get them out,” he said.
Tinubu made it clear that the attacks must not go unpunished. His message was firm: those behind the violence must be found and brought to justice. This visit comes as Benue continues to deal with rising insecurity, especially from armed herdsmen who have been linked to several violent attacks in the region.
While speaking to Governor Hyacinth Alia, Tinubu made a sharp remark about political rivalry in the state. “Your political enemies don’t want you to succeed…Are you just realising that?” he said.
He also noted that local leaders need to set aside political differences and unite to protect their communities. According to him, peace and security are only possible when leaders work hand in hand.
Tinubu stressed that safety is a shared duty and that all levels of government must play their part. He also promised that the federal government will not ignore the suffering of Benue residents.
