President Bola Tinubu has directed the Secretary to the Government of the Federation SGF, Senator George Akume to lead a committee for the resolution of the crisis in Benue State.
The announcement was made on Thursday in Abuja through a statement by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the SGF.
According to the release, the committee will include former governors of Benue, traditional rulers like the Tor Tiv and the Och’Idoma, and other important figures from the state.
Their main goal is to come together and meet with President Tinubu in Abuja, where they will create a strong and workable plan to stop the violence and killings in Benue.
The SGF, who is also a former governor of the state, noted that he is deeply thankful for President Tinubu’s concern and support.
He said the President’s recent visit to Benue, despite his busy schedule, showed genuine concern for the safety and well-being of the people there.
During that visit, the President held a town-hall meeting with various leaders and community members, where many issues were discussed on how to bring peace back to the state.
In the statement, Akume noted that “SGF commended the President’s courageous initiative to witness firsthand the incessant conflicts faced by the State and to reaffirm the government’s dedication to resolve the ongoing conflicts.
During his visit, Mr. President engaged with key stakeholders at a town-hall meeting where crucial matters towards nipping the lingering killings in the bud were ironed out in order to restore peace in the State.”
He added that the President’s decision to form this committee is part of the Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to restore peace, hope, and development across Nigeria. The planned committee will serve as a platform where different voices and ideas can come together for one purpose—lasting peace.
Senator Akume also noted that for peace to return and stay, everyone must work together. He promised the President that he will cooperate fully with local leaders, civil society groups, security agencies, and traditional rulers to carry out the President’s instructions.
Their focus will be on solving the problems behind the conflict, promoting healing between communities, and building a stronger, more peaceful Benue State.
In his words, “Sen. Akume added that achieving sustainable peace requires a united effort. He therefore assured Mr. President of his unwavering commitment to adhere to the tenets of his directive to work hand-in-hand with all stakeholders—local communities, civil society, security agencies, and traditional rulers, to develop and implement comprehensive strategies that address root causes, promote reconciliation, and foster long-term peace and stability in the State.”
