PDP, APC Clash in Plateau as EFCC Arrests 15 Former Lawmakers

Former Speaker of Plateau State House of Assembly, Moses Thomas Sule, and 14 other ex-lawmakers have been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), sparking heated political exchanges between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

The EFCC picked up the former lawmakers on June 17, 2025, over alleged violations of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, and suspected misconduct in procurement processes. These individuals, who currently serve as liaison officers to Governor Caleb Mutfwang, were taken into custody in connection with actions reportedly carried out during their time in office.

Among those arrested are Gwottson Fom, Sani Abubakar, Philip Gwom, Timothy Dantong, Happiness Mathew Akawu, Cornelius Dotyok, Agbalak Ibrahim, Danjuma Azi, Fwangje Bala Ndat, Salome Tanimu Wanglet, Namba Rimuyat, Nimchak Rims, Ishaku Maren, and Paul Datugun.

Following the arrests, the PDP accused the APC of using the EFCC for political purposes. In a statement issued on June 19, the PDP State Publicity Secretary, Jonathan Amande, noted that the arrests were part of a larger strategy by the APC to weaken the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“The Peoples Democratic Party wakes up to a disturbing trend of the arrest of the former speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly and 14 others, orchestrated by some leaders of the All Progressives Congress in the state for cheap political gains,” the statement read.

“These party leaders are wielding anti-graft agencies such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission as a tool to target and intimidate members of the PDP ahead of the 2027 elections.”

The statement further noted that the arrests were not only unfair but appeared to be intended to paint the PDP in a bad light and distract the current administration from its development agenda.

“As a party, we condemn in the strongest terms the parading of our members like common thieves, an action we consider purely politically motivated and aimed at undermining the PDP administration and the party’s influence in the state,” the PDP added.
