The Federal Government of Nigeria has rejected recent reports that suggest its embassy in Iran has closed down and left Nigerian citizens without help, amidst the worsening tensions between Iran and Israel.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through a statement released by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, on Saturday, cleared the air regarding these claims.
It noted that such reports were misleading and untrue, and urged the public to disregard them. According to the Ministry, the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran is still open and actively involved in the protection and support of Nigerians currently living in Iran.
Though the regular running of the Embassy has been affected due to ongoing bombings and security challenges in Tehran, the staff have continued their duties remotely to ensure that no Nigerian is left behind or without help.
The Ministry further shared that discussions are already at an advanced stage between the Nigerian government and the Republic of Armenia. These talks are focused on arranging a safe route through Yerevan, Armenia’s capital, to evacuate Nigerian nationals who wish to leave Iran during this period of unrest.
This followed a formal meeting between Dr. Abdulrasheed Omar Lawal, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran, and Mr. Levon Petrosyan, the Acting Director for the Middle East and Africa in Armenia. During the meeting, Nigeria made an official request to Armenia to allow safe transit of its citizens.
The Ministry noted that Armenia’s support reflects a spirit of humanity and international cooperation. “Nigeria deeply appreciates the willingness of Armenia to assist in ensuring the safety and well-being of our citizens caught in the distressing situation,” the statement read.
The Ministry also restated that Nigeria remains committed to its relationship with Armenia and hopes to continue building on mutual respect and cooperation.
At the same time, the government is working with both Armenian authorities and other international bodies to make sure that the evacuation is well-organized and safe for all involved.
Nigerians in Iran who need help have been asked to reach out to the Embassy through the provided emergency phone numbers: Mr. Esson Anzaku at +989393216872 and Abutalib at +989024199018. Emails can also be sent to nigeria.tehran@mfa.gov.ng, anzakuesson02@gmail.com, and lawshed@yahoo.com.
