US Mission Warns Citizens to Stay Away from Military, Government Spots in Abuja

The United States Mission in Nigeria has sent out a new warning, asking American citizens to avoid unnecessary visits to military and government areas in Abuja, the country’s capital. This message was shared on Monday through an official security alert from the US Embassy in Abuja.

According to the alert, American embassy workers and their family members are not allowed to go to military sites or other government buildings in Abuja unless they have official duties. The embassy notes that this is a precautionary step following growing concerns related to global security trends.

Though the alert did not give exact details about the global events that led to this change, it signals a need for extra care in areas where threats could be more likely.

American citizens living in Nigeria or currently traveling in the country are asked to be extra careful, especially when in public places. They are advised to avoid areas often visited by Western citizens, expatriates, or government representatives.

The embassy also listed a few safety tips for American nationals. These include staying away from crowded events, avoiding daily patterns or routines, and knowing where emergency exits are located when entering buildings. The embassy notes that being prepared and watchful can help reduce personal risk.

Part of the official message reads, “Due to increased security concerns arising from current global developments, US Mission Nigeria informs US citizens that all US Embassy employees and their families are prohibited from non-official travel to a Nigerian military site or other government venue in Abuja at this time.”

The statement continued with clear safety instructions: “Actions to take: Stay alert in public places, with particular attention to locations and venues where Westerners, expatriates, and government officials frequent. Avoid large gatherings and consider limiting unnecessary travel. Avoid predictable routines. Familiarise yourself with emergency exits when you enter buildings. Review your personal security plans.”
