The Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau, says he will give his full support to President Bola Tinubu’s choices for the 2027 elections, including the possibility of being selected as his running mate.
Speaking during a press briefing held on Wednesday in Abuja, Barau responded to media questions regarding growing calls from political groups urging President Tinubu to consider him for the vice-presidential slot.
“Whatever the President asks me to do, I will do it — 100 per cent.
“He is my political father. If he calls on me to work with him, I will simply say, ‘Thank you, sir’ and I will do it,” Barau said.
Barau, who hails from Kano State, said the current focus should remain on the challenges facing Nigeria and not on the 2027 elections. He noted that the President is doing his best to fix problems inherited from the past government and bring positive change to the country.
He also shared how President Tinubu supported him during tough political times in Kano. “The President is the father of the nation. But for now, we stand by him, we are working with him, and we want him to succeed. When he succeeds, we all succeed,” he said.
Barau mentioned that although some supporters pushing his vice-presidential bid mean well, he has asked them to redirect their energy toward backing Tinubu’s leadership.
“When the time comes, we will talk politics. For now, let us face governance and support Mr President to succeed. When he succeeds, we all succeed,” he said again to stress the importance of national focus.
He noted that his commitment to the progressive political group remains strong and that loyalty is a guiding principle in his political life. “I am a progressive to the core, and loyalty is something I cherish deeply. I am 100 per cent loyal to Mr President,” he added.
During the same event, Barau also gave updates on the upcoming public hearings for the Senate Committee on Constitution Review. According to him, the hearings will involve discussions on 59 bills and 31 constitutional amendment proposals already on the table.
He noted that the Senate would welcome additional contributions from the public during the hearings, which are set to take place across six major geopolitical zones in the country.
The hearings will be held in the following zones: Ikot Ekpene in Akwa Ibom (South-South), Kano (North-West), Lagos (South-West), Jos (North-Central), Maiduguri (North-East), and Enugu (South-East). Each zone will be led by a senior member of the Senate, with Barau heading the session in Kano.
