IGP Launches Probe into Retired Officer’s Viral Claim of N2m Retirement Payout

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered a thorough investigation into the claims made by a retired Superintendent of Police in a viral video concerning the welfare and retirement benefits of police pensioners.

In the video that has been widely shared across social media, the retired officer, who spent 35 years in the Nigeria Police Force, expressed strong disappointment over the amount he was reportedly paid after retirement. He said he received just N2 million as his final retirement benefit, which he considered too small after decades of service.

According to his account, he officially retired on October 1, 2023, and only recently received news from the Nigeria Police Pension Board. He said the board informed him that a total of N3 million was approved for him — N1 million to cover arrears from October 2023 to the present, and the remaining N2 million as his full terminal benefit.

In response to the public concern raised by the video, the Nigeria Police Force released a statement through its spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner of Police Olumuyiwa Adejobi. The IGP has ordered NPF Pensions Limited to immediately look into the matter and verify the claims made by the retired officer. The goal, according to the statement, is to identify any issues and ensure proper steps are taken.

The police leadership has made it clear that the welfare of both active and retired officers is important. IGP Egbetokun noted that though there have been efforts in the past to improve the police pension scheme, feedback such as the one in the video helps reveal areas that still need attention and change.

“The IGP has ordered a thorough investigation into the allegations raised in a viral video by a retired Superintendent of Police concerning the welfare and retirement benefits of police pensioners,” the statement read.

He also noted that many police officers have given their lives to serve the nation, and they deserve a pension system that reflects their sacrifice. He reassured both serving and retired officers that the police leadership remains committed to better welfare and more effective pension management.

The IGP urged officers and stakeholders to remain calm and trust the process while the investigation continues. According to Adejobi, relevant agencies will be involved to ensure that the right actions are taken and long-term solutions are found.

“‎The IGP, therefore, reassures all officers, both serving and retired, and their families of the Force’s commitment to improved welfare, and to building a system that honours their sacrifices,” the statement concluded.
