The Port Harcourt Refinery has recently taken delivery of one million barrels of crude oil from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd (NNPCL). This milestone follows the completion of the Old Port Harcourt Refinery’s mechanical repairs in December last year.
The NNPCL aims to begin refining activities in phases, with August being a potential start date for partial operations. The crude oil, delivered in two shipments, saw its most recent batch arriving last Wednesday.
The refining process can yield significant quantities of fuel. Experts suggest that each barrel of crude oil can produce approximately 170 liters of refined products. With one million barrels received, the refinery could generate an estimated 170 million liters of petrol and other refined products.
The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority has granted the necessary license for the refinery to start its operations. This approval marks a crucial step forward in the rehabilitation project.
The Port Harcourt Refinery Rehabilitation Project, valued at around $1.5 billion, includes all phases of Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Installation, and commissioning. The project’s completion is expected to enhance Nigeria’s refining capacity and reduce reliance on imported refined products.
