Ibas Hails Rivers Angels, Promises N50 Million for Federation Cup Victory

The Rivers State Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd), has praised Rivers Angels Football Club for successfully defending their title in the President Federation Cup Women’s competition.

On Saturday, June 28, 2025, the team clinched their 10th title at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos after a thrilling match against Nasarawa Amazons. The match ended in a penalty shootout, where Rivers Angels emerged victorious with a 4-2 score.

Vice Admiral Ibas, who was represented at the event by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Ibibia Worika, expressed deep joy over the achievement.

According to him, the victory is a moment of pride for the entire state. A press statement later released by Juliana Masi, Head of the Press Unit in the SSG’s office, shared the government’s reaction.

“This is absolutely unprecedented. There’s nothing like it. We are proud as Rivers men and women that our girls can put up such a feat, and we are proud as a government.

“His Excellency, the Administrator sent me here to encourage the girls at this final. So I think it’s a wonderful thing. It’s a great feeling, and there are no words to describe it.

“Before the match, I also conveyed His Excellency’s best wishes to the team.

“I told them that the Rivers State Government is very proud that you are even here in the finals and that if you do your best, you can be absolutely certain that Rivers State Government is going to recognize you.”

Prof. Worika also shared that the Administrator has pledged a cash reward of N50 million to the team for their outstanding win. He further urged athletes from Team Rivers, who represented the state at the 2024 National Sports Festival and won medals, to remain focused and calm. He noted that the government is already taking steps to fulfill its promise to those athletes as well.

Reacting to the win, Rivers Angels’ team manager, Mrs. Matilda Otuenne, expressed gratitude to God and noted that the success came from the team’s dedication and tireless efforts throughout the season.

Rivers Angels have now won the President Federation Cup ten times, adding to their past victories in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2024.
