The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has rejected claims making the rounds that President Bola Tinubu has removed him from his position, calling the information false and without any truth.
In a statement released on Sunday by his Director of Press and Public Relations, Segun Imohiosen, Akume said there was no truth to the reports and stressed that President Tinubu has no plans to relieve him of his duties. “The information is entirely false, misleading, and lacks any basis in fact, as Mr President has no any intention of doing so,” the statement read.
Akume described the rumour as a made-up story created by those who want to mislead people and cause confusion. He noted that such reports have no connection to reality and are being pushed by individuals who enjoy stirring up trouble.
According to Akume, the President continues to trust his ability to carry out the duties of his office, especially in the delivery of the Renewed Hope Agenda. He noted that Tinubu still counts on him to help bring the government’s plans and programmes to life.
He also asked Nigerians and media outlets to ignore the rumour and be careful about spreading stories that have not been confirmed. He warned that the spread of false news could weaken public faith in government institutions.
“We urge the public, media organisations, and digital platforms to discountenance such rumours and to exercise caution as well as verify the authenticity of information before disseminating it.”
The statement warned that distributing fake news not only confuses the public but also damages trust in government systems and could create unnecessary fear among citizens.
Imohiosen further pointed out that the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, had earlier released a press statement that supports the SGF’s position. This move shows that the Presidency is aware of the false information and has also denied it officially.
The statement ended by making it clear that Akume is still in office and will continue in his role. “Therefore, Senator Dr. George Akume CON, remains the Secretary to the Government of the Federation,” the statement concluded.
