A leader in the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Osun State, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, has warned that the growing contest over who becomes the Vice Presidential candidate for the 2027 elections could become a major distraction for President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking through a statement released on Saturday, the former member of the Osun State House of Assembly urged politicians to avoid intense campaign activities this early. He noted that political scheming, especially over the Vice Presidency, may shift attention away from the president’s focus on national challenges.
According to Oyintiloye, Nigeria is still trying to stabilize its economy, and the president is carrying heavy responsibilities which need full concentration. He explained that putting political ambition above national interest at this time could make recovery harder for both the economy and national security.
“Some people are already jostling to be Vice President. The President is facing serious tasks to keep the economy healthy, defeat the evil of insurgency, and fix critical infrastructure that is not being supported anymore. The noise-making of these political opportunists, hell-bent on causing distractions, is capable of slowing down progress,” he said.
Oyintiloye noted that with inflation, unemployment, and insecurity still troubling citizens, now is not the right time to begin power tussles. He urged leaders and their followers to allow the president to focus on development efforts that directly affect the people’s well-being.
He also mentioned that President Tinubu’s government has been making steps to stabilize the economy and fix decaying infrastructure. However, constant political distractions may undo these efforts and create even more public dissatisfaction.
The APC chieftain urged party loyalists and politicians to put the people first. He warned that early political fights could weaken public trust and slow down important programs that are meant to improve lives.
