A devastating accident claimed the lives of 14 passengers and left four others injured on Monday at Kanya Market in Jigawa State. The incident occurred when a Daf truck collided head-on with a Toyota Hiace minibus.
State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Lawan Adam, provided details of the tragic event. According to Adam, the crash happened at approximately 11:20 a.m. The Daf truck, bearing registration number GMB 242 KD, was traveling from Kanya Market when it approached an immigration checkpoint. Simultaneously, the Toyota Hiace minibus, registered as XA 381 GAS, was en route from Kano to Kanya Market, overloaded and speeding.
When immigration officers attempted to stop the minibus, the driver refused to comply and tried to bypass the checkpoint by swerving into the opposite lane. This reckless maneuver resulted in a head-on collision with the oncoming Daf truck.
“Consequently, four passengers suffered severe injuries, and fourteen others passed away instantly,” stated DSP Lawan Adam.
Upon receiving the distress call, the Divisional Police Officer of Kanya Division and his patrol team swiftly responded. They arrived at the scene to find a harrowing sight. The team quickly evacuated the deceased and injured victims to Kanya Babba Cottage Hospital. The hospital staff confirmed the deaths and began treating the injured.
The police spokesperson assured the public that a thorough investigation into the crash is underway to determine the exact causes and prevent future occurrences. The incident has left the community in mourning, highlighting the dangers of road travel in the area.
