The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman in Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State, Seun Adelore, has stepped down from his position and exited the party, citing unfair treatment, lack of recognition for loyalty, and a shift away from democratic values.
Adelore, who is known to be a staunch supporter of Governor Seyi Makinde, made his decision public through a resignation letter obtained by reporters in Ibadan on Sunday. In the letter, he strongly criticized the current state of affairs within the PDP, describing the party as being taken over by select groups acting in their personal interests.
He noted, “The PDP in this state is increasingly being run like a private enterprise by select factions, undermining the collective spirit and transparency that should define party politics.”
Party insiders revealed that Adelore’s resignation may be linked to recent moves within the PDP, particularly the alleged imposition of Folajimi Oyekunle, Deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Makinde, as the party’s candidate for the forthcoming Ibadan North Federal Constituency by-election.
Oyekunle was reportedly endorsed after other hopefuls stepped down and pledged their backing during a meeting with the governor. This meeting, sources said, was aimed at reaching a consensus on the party’s flagbearer following the death of former lawmaker Olaide Akinremi. Akinremi, who represented the constituency under the All Progressives Congress (APC), passed away at 51 in July 2024 after a brief illness.
Adelore stated that his resignation came after careful reflection and wide consultations with his political allies. He also mentioned that despite his contributions to the party since 2018, he had become increasingly concerned about how core values had deteriorated.
“The decision was not made lightly,” he wrote. “After deep personal reflection and wide consultation with my supporters, I have chosen to step aside in order to preserve my integrity and honour.”
He continued, “Despite my significant contributions to the party since 2018 alongside other loyal members, which contributed to the success of the current administration, I have watched with deep concern as values have deteriorated within the party.”
He described the internal culture as growing toxic, accusing party leaders of betraying those who stood by them during challenging times.
“Vindictiveness, authoritarian tendencies, and a lack of respect for human dignity have unfortunately become pervasive. As Niccolò Machiavelli observed, despots often mask cruelty with gestures of charity, while trampling those who helped bring them to power. This pattern has become evident in the state, where loyalty is often punished rather than appreciated,” he said.
Adelore also spoke out against what he described as an increasing culture of manipulation and suppression of dissent within the party.
“Over the past two years, I have witnessed a growing trend of imposition, intimidation, and disregard for democratic processes—practices that conflict with the foundational principles of the PDP. I can no longer lend my name and reputation to such contradictions,” the letter read.
He expressed appreciation to his supporters, stating that it had been an honour to serve them and work toward the betterment of the state.
“I am deeply grateful to my supporters, whose unwavering belief in my leadership has been humbling. It has been an honour to serve the party and contribute meaningfully to the progress of the state.
“I remain firmly committed to the ideals of true democracy and the genuine development of our state, not superficial accomplishments promoted by surrogates,” he added.
