The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has reactivated the profile of Jamiu Basola Owodunni, a Civil Engineering graduate from the Federal University of Technology, Akure, after it was earlier flagged for alleged irregular admission.
Basola, who completed his studies in 2024 with a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.41, said he took the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in 2017 and secured admission into FUTA the following year. However, his journey took an unexpected turn during his final clearance for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) when his name did not appear on the JAMB matriculation list—a required step for NYSC mobilisation.
“I was advised to verify my details on the JAMB matriculation list, which indicated fake admission,” he said.
Following the issue, Basola explained that he could no longer access his JAMB portal. In response, he wrote to several authorities within FUTA, including the registrar, the vice-chancellor, and the admissions committee, asking them to help clarify his admission status.
Speaking with reporters on Monday, Basola confirmed that JAMB had reopened his portal and updated his name on the matriculation list.
“We are still in the process because I have not been mobilised for NYSC. My portal was locked. But now, I am able to log in; I can now reprint. Though I had some of the documents before, I was able to reprint my documents again. My name was not on the matriculation list, but now it has changed,” Basola said.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) also released a statement on Monday confirming this progress. According to NANS National PRO Adeyemi Ajasa, the intervention by the national leadership of the association played a major role in resolving the matter.
“This positive development is a direct result of the decisive intervention by the NANS national leadership, led by the astute President, Comrade Olushola Oladoja,” Ajasa said.
Ajasa noted that the resolution of Basola’s case is not just a personal victory but also a win for all Nigerian students.
“Jamiu’s academic dedication was regrettably challenged by a ‘fake admission’ flag after years of diligent study. His fight was indeed our fight, and his victory is a triumph for every Nigerian student,” the statement added.
