We’ll Convene NEC Meeting to Expel Obi — LP

The Labour Party is planning a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting with the aim of expelling its 2023 presidential flagbearer, Peter Obi, over what it calls anti-party actions.

Abayomi Arabambi, who serves as the factional national publicity secretary of the party, revealed this development during an appearance on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Tuesday.

Arabambi said Obi’s recent public support for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a party aligned with a larger political coalition, amounts to a breach of the party’s rules.

“We’re convening a NEC meeting where Peter Obi will be expelled,” Arabambi said. “You know he was on suspension before he went ahead to do the anti-party activities. You don’t go and join a political party, and the same time you still put your leg in another political party. He knows it’s unconstitutional to belong to two political parties at the same time.”

Arabambi further noted that Obi’s actions have stirred confusion within the Labour Party, insisting that such behavior is unacceptable for anyone aspiring to lead. According to him, Obi’s involvement in the ADC initiative has only deepened the crisis that already exists in the party.

He accused the former Anambra State governor of being the origin of the internal division plaguing the party. “He’s the one that started the crisis in the Labour Party,” Arabambi added, arguing that Obi is not suitable to lead any political structure due to what he described as inconsistent behavior.

Despite these claims, Obi has maintained that he has not officially joined the ADC. In a recent statement, he clarified that his presence at ADC events was as a supporter of the broader coalition and not as a registered member of the party.

“I am not a party member of ADC,” Obi said, “but rather a supporter of the movement.”

Obi, who has not hidden his ambition to run for president again, insists he remains a member of the Labour Party and believes he has what it takes to lead the country. “I am qualified to lead Nigeria,” he said.
