No Plan To Return Monthly Environmental Sanitation – Commissioner

The Lagos State Government has clarified that it is not reinstating the monthly environmental sanitation exercise or implementing any movement restrictions by the end of July. This announcement was made by the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, following widespread rumors online.

In a statement issued by Kunle Adeshina, the ministry’s Director of Public Affairs, Wahab emphasized that the state government has no plans to reintroduce the monthly sanitation exercise that was previously practiced.

Wahab urged residents to disregard the misleading information and continue their daily activities without fear of movement restrictions. “There will be no restriction of movements on the last Saturday of July as circulated in some news reports,” he affirmed.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, during a sanitation sensitisation event at Campos playground on Lagos Island, announced a new initiative aimed at promoting cleanliness within communities. This weekly community-based sensitisation and awareness exercise will engage residents in voluntary environmental cleaning efforts.

The governor emphasized the state’s commitment to leading by example, with government officials participating in the weekly clean-up activities alongside the residents.

“The governor said the state government officials will lead from the front every week by going round to join residents in cleaning their environment in a voluntary manner while preaching the message,” Wahab noted.

Wahab also clarified that at no point did the governor indicate that the monthly sanitation exercise and movement restrictions would be reinstated in July or any other future date.

The commissioner urged residents to adopt regular cleaning habits and not wait for government-declared sanitation days. He highlighted the importance of maintaining a clean environment consistently.
