The Rivers State Government has officially denied reports that Governor Siminialayi Fubara proposed an N80,000 minimum wage for civil servants. These rumors, circulating on social media, have been labeled as false by the state government.
On Friday, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Nelson Chukwudi, issued a statement in Port Harcourt addressing the false report. Chukwudi emphasized that the state government has not yet decided on a new minimum wage for its workers. He assured that any decision on this matter would be communicated at the appropriate time.
Chukwudi stated: “The attention of the Rivers State Government has been drawn to claims circulating in online media that His Excellency, the Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS, has proposed to pay a new minimum wage of N80,000 for civil servants in the state and local government areas.”
He continued, “Therefore, it is important to state that the unverified claims being circulated by Newsweekng.com, and titled: ‘Breaking News: Governor Fubara Proposes N80,000 minimum wage’ is totally false and misleading.”
The Rivers State Government urged the public, especially civil servants, to disregard these claims. They reassured that the government would announce its stance on the minimum wage issue soon.
