President Bola Tinubu will leave Abuja on Saturday, July 20, to participate in a significant African Union (AU) meeting in Accra, Ghana. This Sixth Mid-Year Coordination Meeting will bring together leaders from the African Union, Regional Economic Communities (RECs), Regional Mechanisms (RMs), and AU Member States to discuss crucial issues.
As the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Authority of Heads of State and Government, President Tinubu is scheduled to address the gathering. He will provide an update on the progress and obstacles related to regional integration in West Africa since the previous meeting held in Nairobi, Kenya, in July 2023.
Presidential spokesman Chief Ajuri Ngelale announced that President Tinubu’s speech will include the presentation of the ‘2024 Report on the State of the Community.’ This report will cover topics such as peace, regional security, governance, economic integration, humanitarian and social development, energy, mining, and agriculture.
The meeting in Accra will be conducted under the AU’s 2024 theme: “Educate and Skill Africa for the 21st Century.” Since its inception in 2017, the Mid-Year Coordination Meeting has served as a crucial platform for aligning the efforts of the AU and RECs to advance continental integration. It replaced the previous June/July summits to streamline the agenda and improve coordination.
During the meeting, President Tinubu will also discuss the AU’s early warning and conflict prevention mechanisms and promote enhanced cooperation among regional economic communities. The aim is to accelerate integration and address shared challenges more effectively.
