MMA Customs Hits Record Revenue of N80.3bn in Six Months

The Muritala Muhammed Area Command (MMAC) of the Nigeria Customs Service has achieved a significant milestone by generating N80.3 billion in revenue in the first six months of 2024. This achievement marks a substantial increase from the N38.7 billion recorded in the same period last year.

During a press conference in Lagos, MMAC Customs Area Controller Michael Awe highlighted the factors contributing to this impressive performance. He stated that the current revenue is more than double last year’s figure, reflecting a 107.5 percent increase.

Awe credited this success to the unwavering support from the Comptroller-General of Customs, Mr. Bashir Adeniyi, and his management team. He emphasized the dedication and resilience of the officers, who ensured proper declarations by agents and strict adherence to import and export guidelines.

In addition to revenue generation, MMAC has made significant strides in anti-smuggling efforts. Awe reported notable seizures, including five packages of 250mg tramadol, 12 packages of 225mg tramadol, and one package of 50-round 9mm live ammunition.

Other confiscated items include 46 packages of dried sea cucumbers, three packages of dried donkey male genitals, and 55 pieces of Jojef Tomahawk semi-automatic rifles.

The total Duty Paid Value (DPV) of these items is estimated at N6.06 billion. These seizures were mainly due to infractions such as false declarations and non-compliance with import/export guidelines as stipulated in the Nigeria Customs Service Act of 2023.

Furthermore, Awe disclosed that the command recorded N266.6 million worth of exported goods during the same period, with a Free on Board (FOB) value of $204.59 thousand.

Awe also highlighted the importance of stakeholder engagement, noting that the command’s open-door policy has facilitated the resolution of various issues with stakeholders. He encouraged partners in the clearance value chain to remain proactive and collaborate effectively to overcome emerging challenges.
