August 1: Minister Makes Bold Revelation on Why Tinubu Doesn’t Want Nigerians To Protest

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, clarified the Federal Government’s stance against the upcoming nationwide protests scheduled for August 1 to 10, 2024. He noted that while citizens have the right to protest under the constitution, the government is concerned about potential disruptions and violence that could arise from such demonstrations.

Idris underscored President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to upholding democratic rights while ensuring public order and safety. “The President believes in everyone’s freedom within the laws to do what they think is right, but vehemently opposes any actions that could harm Nigerians or disrupt peace,” the minister affirmed.

Highlighting global precedents where peaceful protests have turned chaotic, Idris expressed skepticism about maintaining peace during the proposed protests. “We cannot risk allowing the situation to escalate into chaos orchestrated by troublemakers,” he stated.

Acknowledging the genuine grievances expressed by Nigerians nationwide regarding economic challenges, Idris outlined ongoing government efforts to address unemployment issues. He disclosed plans for a new policy aimed at providing stipends to unemployed university and polytechnic graduates until they secure formal employment.

Responding to concerns raised by the Charismatic Bishops Conference about their initial support for the protests, Archbishop Leonard Kawas clarified their stance. “We have opted to pursue dialogue and peace, urging aggrieved Nigerians to grant us time to engage in constructive negotiations with the government,” Kawas stated.
