August 1: NSCDC Tightens Security Ahead of Nationwide Protests

As tensions rise across Nigeria due to planned nationwide protests, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has issued directives for increased security around key government facilities. With protests set for August 1-10, citizens are reacting strongly to the worsening economic situation and high cost of living, which organizers cite as the primary reasons for the demonstrations.

NSCDC Commandant General Ahmed Abubakar Audi emphasized the Corps’ role in protecting critical infrastructure in a statement released by the Corps’ Public Relations Officer, Babawale Afolabi. The NSCDC is responsible for safeguarding vital assets such as oil pipelines, power installations, communication equipment, and railway facilities. Audi also highlighted the NSCDC’s commitment to the Safe Schools Initiative and other essential public utilities.

“The Commandant General of the NSCDC, Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi mni OFR, has reiterated the stance of the Corps in line with its core mandates concerning the proposed nationwide protest, affirming that the NSCDC will not allow any act of violence, disruption of peace, law and order, destruction of properties, looting, vandalism of critical national assets and infrastructure, amongst others,” read the statement.

Audi stressed that any damage to these critical infrastructures would severely impact the national economy. To counter potential threats, the NSCDC has heightened its intelligence and operational readiness. All State Commandants, Provosts of Colleges, and heads of various formations have been instructed to stay vigilant and ensure the security of these essential services.

The Commandant General also addressed the broader context of the economic challenges, noting that such difficulties are not unique to Nigeria but are part of a global trend. He cautioned Nigerian youths against being manipulated by hidden agendas and urged them to engage in dialogue and non-violent methods for expressing their grievances.

“The NSCDC is a Federal Government paramilitary agency with statutory roles and responsibilities, and we remain the lead agency in the protection of all critical national assets and infrastructure across the nation,” the statement continued. “Our commitment to the protection of the lives and property of the Nigerian people is paramount.”

The statement further called on Nigerians to be patient and cooperative with the government’s efforts to address these economic issues. It encouraged student organizations to take advantage of the Student Loan Scheme, which provides interest-free loans for both formal education and vocational training.

Acknowledging the constitutional right to peaceful protest, the NSCDC warned that criminal elements might hijack the planned protests, leading to chaos and violence. Therefore, the NSCDC, along with other security agencies, is prepared to ensure public safety and prevent any breakdown of law and order.
