The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has conducted its ward congresses in Rivers State, going against two court orders that aimed to stop the exercise.
On Saturday, members were seen at the PDP Secretariat in Port Harcourt, collecting materials for the congresses, which they claimed were destined for their respective wards. Following the collection, they headed to their various councils.
This move by the PDP comes despite two distinct court orders halting the activity. The first order came from Justice Charles Wali, who barred the party, its national chairman, and national secretary from conducting ward, local government, and state congresses in Rivers State until a suit before the court is resolved.
The second order was issued by Justice Sobere Biambo earlier in the month. Justice Wali’s order specifically stated, “An interim order is hereby issued stopping or suspending the PDP congress in Rivers State scheduled to hold on July 27 or any other date or location pending the determination of the motion on notice already filed.”
Despite these orders, a Federal High Court in Abuja issued a counter order that permitted the PDP to continue with its activities. This conflicting legal scenario has led to the PDP moving forward with the congresses, aiming to elect new officers to oversee the party’s affairs at ward, local government, and state levels nationwide.
