Babcock University Paid N300 Million for Electricity in May, Says Vice-Chancellor

The Vice-Chancellor of Babcock University, Professor Ademola Tayo, disclosed that the university incurred a substantial expense of N300 million on electricity tariffs in May. This revelation was made during the 22nd convocation ceremony held on Sunday.

Prof. Tayo highlighted the burden of high electricity costs on educational institutions in Nigeria, emphasizing its impact on the quality of education. He stated, “I hereby call on the government to reduce the electricity tariff. High electricity tariffs are a threat to quality education in Nigeria. Universities and education need support for the development of the country.”

In addition to discussing financial challenges, Prof. Tayo celebrated the academic achievements of the students. He announced that 132 students graduated with first-class honors, and 16 students achieved distinctions in the School of Clinical Sciences. Overall, Babcock University produced 2,842 graduates this year, marking another milestone in the institution’s history.

The 22nd convocation ceremony was a momentous occasion for graduates, families, and the academic community, despite the financial strains highlighted by the Vice-Chancellor. Prof. Tayo’s call for government intervention underscores the need for policy changes to support educational institutions, ensuring they can continue to provide high-quality education without being hampered by excessive utility costs.
