BREAKING: Military Threatens To Intervene In Nationwide Hunger Protests

The Nigerian military has announced its readiness to intervene if ongoing nationwide protests escalate beyond police control. The demonstrations, labeled #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria, have sparked significant unrest due to widespread looting and property damage.

During a press conference on Friday, the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, emphasized the military’s support for police efforts to manage the crisis. “We are supporting the police all through. We are just on standby. The police are doing a good job; they are handling the situation for now,” said Musa.

He assured the public that the military remains vigilant, prepared to act if necessary. “Unless it breaches beyond what they can handle, then the military will step in. The military is on standby and we are watching day and night.”

Musa acknowledged the protesters’ grievances concerning the country’s economic hardships but urged for unity and restraint. He called on Nigerians to avoid destructive actions, which only exacerbate the nation’s difficulties.

“We know we are challenged as a nation but we know we will overcome working together as Nigerians… Let us avoid anything that will bring mayhem to our country,” he said.

Reflecting on the events of the first day of the protests, August 1, Musa described the widespread vandalism as “crazy.”

He highlighted incidents of people breaking into houses and stealing property, expressing a firm stance against such actions. “The Armed Forces and the entire security agencies will not stand by and see that to continue,” Musa warned.

The CDS also warned that the military will act professionally and prosecute those caught looting. “Anyone that is caught will be taken to court and will be dealt with,” he stated. Additionally, the military is working to identify and pursue the sponsors behind the protests.

“There are individuals who are sponsoring them, pushing them to do this, we are going after them,” Musa declared, stressing that the authorities will not tolerate further destruction and lawlessness.
