Bobrisky, the well-known Nigerian cross-dresser and social media influencer, has been released from the Kirikiri Correctional Centre in Lagos State. His release on Monday morning followed a six-month imprisonment for naira abuse, a case that drew significant public attention.
Bobrisky, whose real name is Idris Okuneye, was seen greeting fans in a video that quickly circulated on X.com (formerly Twitter). The video captured the celebratory atmosphere as supporters welcomed him back.
In April, Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court in Lagos sentenced Bobrisky without the option of a fine. The court aimed to send a clear message against the abuse of Nigeria’s currency. The sentence was controversial, sparking debates about fairness and selective justice.
Following his release, social media was abuzz with reactions. One user, @toolzmoney, questioned whether Bobrisky had truly been in prison, saying, “Bobrisky after finally regaining his freedom. Una sure say this guy go prison??” Another user, @OloriSupergal, celebrated his return with the post, “Bobrisky aka Mummy of Laygurrrrrrsssss is back!!!!”
The debate over Bobrisky’s imprisonment continued with some users expressing skepticism. @ehime24 posted, “Deep in our hearts, we all know Bobrisky did not go to prison……Omo get money OOO, make prison no be like a vacation.”
Others highlighted perceived injustices in Bobrisky’s sentencing. @ChiomaChuka argued that the incarceration was unfair and targeted, stating, “There are several videos of politicians, their families, & politically exposed persons spraying naira; NONE of them have been arrested or jailed. A bad thing is a bad thing.”
Upon his release, Bobrisky spoke to journalists, advising Nigerians to respect the naira to avoid imprisonment. He emphasized, “You have to follow the rules and abide by the laws. Don’t spray money, or you will become a landlord in Kirikiri.”
