Prominent human rights lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju has vehemently criticized the actions of individuals who displayed Russian flags and advocated for a military coup during the #EndBadGovernance protests.
Adeyanju labeled these actions as “treason” and called on security agencies to take immediate action against those involved.
The Nigerian Police Force has already responded, arresting 31 individuals on charges of treason. According to ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, 30 individuals were detained in Kaduna for producing and distributing Russian flags while inciting unrest, and one individual was apprehended in Kano for recruiting others to distribute the flags.
Adeyanju said: “It is treason to be raising Russia flag and calling for military coup. That is not protest but treason. Security agencies should arrest those doing so. While we welcome those who didn’t protest for once under Buhari’s terrible 8-years of bad governance, treason is condemnable.”
Adeyanju’s condemnation comes amidst ongoing nationwide protests against poor governance. These protests have highlighted widespread dissatisfaction with government policies, which many feel have negatively impacted the lives of Nigerian citizens.
Protesters are demanding meaningful changes and long-term solutions, rather than temporary relief measures.
