The family of Onyeka Onwenu, the beloved and iconic Nigerian singer, has announced that she will be buried before the end of this month. This information was shared during a recent visit from the Musical Society of Nigeria (MCSN) to the family’s residence in Ikoyi, Lagos.
Onyeka Onwenu, a cherished member of the MCSN, passed away suddenly last Tuesday after performing at a birthday party. Her unexpected death has left many fans and colleagues in shock and mourning.
During the visit, Orits Wiliki, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of MCSN, led the delegation in expressing their condolences to Onwenu’s family. Her sons, Abram and Tjiani, spoke about their intention to honor their mother’s wishes by arranging her burial as soon as possible.
In the condolence register, renowned musician King Sunny Ade shared his heartfelt sorrow. “Dear sister and colleague, may your gentle soul rest in perfect peace. Your fans and friends all over the world will remember you forever,” he wrote, reflecting the sentiments of many who admired Onwenu’s talent and grace.
Onyeka Onwenu had previously expressed her wishes for a simple burial in an opinion piece for Premium Times in 2021. She requested that her burial be without unnecessary fanfare, and instead be a time for quiet reflection, prayers, and modest celebrations.
“Do it quickly, quietly and privately. Mourn, yes but not excessively. Celebrate me with prayers, lunch or dinner afterwards. Share some jokes about me and laugh,” she had written.
The exact details of the burial arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days.
