The Department of State Services (DSS) has announced that it will soon reveal the identities of individuals and groups sponsoring protesters who are waving foreign flags, particularly Russian flags, to incite unrest in Nigeria.
Peter Afunanya, the DSS spokesman, made this announcement during a joint press conference held in Abuja. Afunanya called on Nigerians to remain patient as the Federal Government takes necessary steps to address the issue. He emphasized that the DSS is diligently investigating the matter and will disclose the names of the sponsors once the investigation is complete.
“Now, people have started exhibiting behaviors that are detrimental to the security, welfare, and orderliness of society. We won’t remain passive. We have arrested those behind the flag display. It’s not just about children waving flags; there’s more to it,” Afunanya stated.
Afunanya explained that some aspects of the DSS’s operations remain confidential due to their sensitive nature. He assured the public that the DSS is committed to seeing the investigation through to its conclusion.
“There are aspects of our operations that we may not disclose publicly due to their sensitivity, the ongoing nature of investigations, or because revealing them might jeopardize the investigations. We will see it through to the end, and you may be surprised if and when we do make the information public.”
The display of Russian flags occurred during the recent #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests, which have been particularly strong in the northern part of the country. These protests are a direct response to the perceived failures of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, with many citizens voicing their frustrations over widespread hunger and suffering.
