JUST IN: President Tinubu Directs Military To Clamp Down On Illegal Miners

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the military to intensify efforts to combat illegal mining activities across Nigeria.

This move is part of the government’s initiative to diversify the economy, reducing its heavy reliance on oil by tapping into the country’s rich solid mineral resources, such as gold, tin, and coal.

Speaking at the State House in Abuja, President Tinubu addressed participants from Course 32 of the National Defence College (NDC). He emphasized the importance of economic diversification and the critical role that a secure and well-regulated mining sector could play in achieving this goal.

“I recognize the need for the diversification of the economy, and we have been pushing hard on this,” he stated, acknowledging the threats posed by illegal miners.

The Minister of Solid Minerals, Dr. Dele Alake, has been actively working to enhance the mining sector’s contribution to national revenue. As part of these efforts, the Mining Guard has been deployed across various mining sites nationwide to curb illegal activities.

Illegal mining has become a significant problem, particularly in regions like Zamfara, Niger, Nasarawa, Plateau, Osun, and Ondo states. These activities not only deplete valuable resources but also contribute to security challenges in these areas.

During the NDC presentation, titled “Harnessing the Mining Industry for Enhanced National Security and Development: Strategic Options for Nigeria by 2035,” the participants highlighted the mining sector’s potential in strengthening national security and economic development.

President Tinubu praised the NDC participants for their in-depth research and insights into the mining industry. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring a stable economic environment through better security and resource management.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army’s 32 Artillery Brigade in Akure recently arrested 12 individuals involved in illegal mining activities in Ondo State. The arrests, which were based on credible intelligence, are part of ongoing efforts to address the growing problem of illegal mining in the region.

Mr. Olugbenga Atiba, Senior Special Assistant on Security to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, emphasized that these actions are essential to curbing the security challenges posed by illegal miners.
