Just In: Former Federal Lawmaker Passes Away Days Before Birthday

Former Federal House of Representatives member Oyewole Duro Babafemi Diya has passed away, according to reports.

Diya, who was also a former Lagos State House of Assembly representative, died early this Friday morning. His death comes just days before his 61st birthday, which would have been on August 20, 2024.

Diya, the younger brother of the late former Chief of Defence Staff Oladipo Diya, had been dealing with a heart-related illness for several years. His contributions to Nigerian politics were significant.

He served as a two-term representative for Somolu Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives. Additionally, he was a two-term member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, representing Somolu State Constituency I.

Hon. Kolade Alabi David, Chairman of Bariga Local Council, expressed his sorrow over Diya’s death: “I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family, political associates, and the members of our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), on the passing of Hon. Oyewole Babafemi Diya.

Hon. Wole Diya, a former Lagos State House of Assembly Member representing Somolu, later went on to represent Somolu Federal Constituency at the National Assembly. His exemplary leadership extended beyond politics, leaving a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him.”

The Chairman of Somolu Local Government, Hon. Abdul Hamed Salawu ‘Dullar,’ described Diya as a “perfect gentleman” whose death has left a significant void in the community. He noted, “Hon. Diya was a leader who exemplified humility, integrity, and unwavering dedication to the people he served. His concern for the well-being of others set him apart as a leader of remarkable empathy and vision.”

Lagos Commissioner for Transportation, Hon. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, also paid tribute: “It’s deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Honorable Wole Diya, a rare gem and a true champion of the community. A man with an unwavering commitment to public service as well as a party loyalist leaving an indelible mark in the hearts of many. His kindness, wisdom, and integrity will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.”
