Power Outage Looms in Rivers and Bayelsa as Vandals Wreck TCN Towers

Some parts of Rivers and Bayelsa States are set to face prolonged power outages following the destruction of thirteen key towers belonging to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). The towers, part of the Ahoada-Yenagoa 132kV Double Circuits, were targeted by vandals, leaving several communities without power for months.

In a statement released on Wednesday, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, highlighted the critical nature of the damage. “Despite these ongoing efforts, the recent vandalism of the thirteen towers presents a significant challenge to TCN,” the statement read.

This incident is not the first attack on the transmission line. Earlier, vandals had targeted the same Ahoada-Yenagoa transmission line, forcing the TCN to undertake repairs and reinforcements. TCN had recently awarded a new contract aimed at strengthening towers 19 to 31 in the affected area after previous acts of vandalism.

The thirteen towers that were destroyed are scattered across various communities, including Okobe in Ahoada East, Emezhi 1 and Mbiama in Ahoada West, and the Igbogene community in Bayelsa State. TCN has warned that due to the scale of the damage, it may take several months to fully restore the power supply to the affected areas.
