The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has won all 20 local government areas of Bauchi State, following the council polls held on Saturday, August 17, 2024.
The announcement was made late on Saturday night by Alhaji Ahmed Makama, the Executive Chairman of the Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission (BASIEC). The results solidify PDP’s stronghold in Bauchi State, as the party managed to secure all available positions in the local government elections.
Leading up to the election, the atmosphere in Bauchi was marked by tensions, especially from the main opposition party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The APC had raised concerns about potential bias and alleged that the PDP, with possible support from BASIEC, might manipulate the election results. However, despite their apprehensions, the polls proceeded, and the PDP swept through every local government area, leaving no room for the APC.
This overwhelming victory by the PDP has fueled speculation about the next steps the APC may take. Many political analysts believe that the APC might reject the election results and could potentially seek legal avenues to challenge the outcome. However, as of Sunday morning, no formal statement or legal action had been made public by the APC.
The elected chairmen and their deputies are expected to be sworn into office on Sunday, August 18, as announced by the Bauchi State government. This event will mark the formal start of their tenure in office.
