Isese Day: Lagos State Announces Tuesday Public Holiday

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced that Tuesday, August 20, 2024, will be a public holiday in celebration of Isese Day. This move marks the first time Lagos State has officially recognized Isese Day with a public holiday, underscoring the government’s dedication to traditional institutions and cultural heritage.

The announcement was made through a circular issued by Bode Agoro, the state’s Head of Service, on Monday. The circular, titled “Commemoration of Year 2024 Isese Day – Declaration of Work Free Day,” details that the holiday is intended to support and celebrate traditional practices and the preservation of indigenous cultures.

According to the circular, “It is hereby notified for general information that this Year’s Isese Day Celebration will be held on Tuesday, 20th August 2024. In emphasising commitment to give necessary support to traditional institutions, as well as enhance the promotion of Indigenous tradition by preserving cultural heritage, Mr. Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has approved that Tuesday, 20th August 2024, be declared a Work-Free Day for Public Servants in the State.”

Public servants will be expected to return to work on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at 8:00 a.m. The circular further instructs all Accounting Officers to widely disseminate this information.

This declaration aligns with the United Nations’ designation of August 20th as World Traditional Religion Day, aiming to promote global recognition of traditional religions and practices.
