The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for an urgent National Executive Council (NEC) meeting after its National President, Joe Ajaero, was summoned by the police for alleged involvement in terrorism financing.
The NEC meeting is set to take place at 8:00 a.m. today, at Labour House, in the Olaitan Oyerinde Hall. All NLC affiliate leaders and state chapter representatives are expected to attend.
This emergency meeting was announced in a notice titled, “Notice of Emergency National Executive Council Meeting,” signed by the NLC Secretary General, Emmanuel Ugboaja.
In the notice, Ugboaja extended “fraternal greetings” from the congress headquarters and confirmed the time and location of the meeting.
He added that the meeting was called to discuss the police’s summons of Ajaero on serious charges related to criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, and other crimes.
Earlier reports from Empowered NewsWire indicated that Ajaero was summoned by the police on Monday, August 19, 2024. The invitation letter, signed by ACP Adamu Mu’azu on behalf of the Commissioner of Police Intelligence, required Ajaero to appear at the IRT Complex by Guzape Junction today at 10:00 a.m. The letter warned that if he failed to report, an arrest warrant would be issued against him.
The situation follows a raid on the NLC national secretariat in Abuja on July 7, 2024. The police admitted to the operation, which they claimed was part of an effort to gather evidence against a foreign figure seen as a threat to Nigeria’s democratic system.
The NLC has since condemned the raid, calling for the release of its arrested members and the return of confiscated documents. It also accused the government of meddling in its affairs, including attempts to reduce the tenure of trade union leaders.
