New Presidential Jet Purchased From Saudi Arabia Refurbished – Report

Investigative report by LEADERSHIP have revealed that the Airbus A330 recently acquired by Nigeria as the country’s new presidential jet had a complex service history before joining the presidential fleet.

The aircraft, which previously belonged to Mid East Jet in Saudi Arabia, replaces Nigeria’s aging Boeing B737-700(BBJ) that had served for nearly two decades. President Bola Tinubu’s administration took delivery of the refurbished jet on August 18, 2024, and it was used for the President’s official trip to France shortly after.

The Airbus A330 initially served with Mid East Jet from November 27, 2009, until May 25, 2012. Following that, it operated with Constellah Aviation before returning to Mid East Jet in 2014.

Nigeria’s federal government finalized the purchase earlier this year, and the plane is now registered as 5N-FGA, with the HEX CODE 06430C. The aircraft was delivered from France to serve as the nation’s primary mode of presidential air travel.

While the purchase of the Airbus A330 has garnered attention as a significant upgrade, some aviation experts have voiced concerns about the decision to acquire an older model. One expert, speaking anonymously, raised concerns about the maintenance challenges and costs associated with an aircraft of this age.

“The presidency should have acquired a Boeing Aircraft that is easier to maintain in the country than purchasing an Airbus. Also, for security reasons too, presidential fleet aircraft maintenance too are better and safer being complied with in-house, providing the right equipment and tooling for this instead of overseas where the crew hotel accommodations, logistics, per diem and others are all inclusive because they have to be there and monitor the maintenance and security assurance,” the expert said.

Despite these concerns, the presidency has justified the purchase by emphasizing the cost savings involved. The Airbus A330 was reportedly acquired at a price significantly below its market value, with officials estimating that it will save millions in operational costs annually, particularly in fuel and maintenance expenses.

The decision to purchase a new jet followed an investigative parliamentary hearing which underscored the need for a more reliable and cost-efficient aircraft. The Senate’s security and intelligence committee had urged the government to replace the old Boeing B737-700(BBJ) after its high downtime and frequent repairs posed operational challenges.

Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, took to social media to praise the aircraft’s advanced features. He noted that the Airbus A330 is equipped with modern avionics, sophisticated communication systems, and a customized interior that will enhance the comfort and efficiency of the President’s travel.
