Former ICPC Chairman, Justice Emmanuel Ayoola, Passes Away at 90

Retired Justice Emmanuel Olayinka Ayoola, a former Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), has passed away at the age of 90.

His family confirmed his death in a statement released on Wednesday, expressing gratitude to God for the life he lived.

Justice Ayoola’s family, in their statement, expressed deep sadness over the loss of their patriarch.

The statement read, “With heartfelt gratitude to the Lord Almighty, for a life beautifully lived, we announce the passing away of our beloved Dad, granddad, great-granddad, brother, uncle, benefactor, and friend, Hon. Justice Emmanuel Olayinka Ayoola (JSC, rtd; CON).”

Justice Ayoola was appointed as the chairman of the ICPC in 2005, serving in the role until 2010. During his tenure, he worked diligently to strengthen Nigeria’s fight against corruption, a deep-rooted problem in the country.

He was known for his integrity, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to the rule of law. Many saw his leadership as a turning point in Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts.

Born in 1933, Justice Ayoola’s career spanned over five decades, during which he earned a reputation as one of the most distinguished legal minds in the country. He began his judicial journey after obtaining his law degree and was later called to the bar in 1958.

He went on to serve in various capacities, both nationally and internationally. His judicial career included roles as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, as well as serving on the bench in The Gambia and Seychelles, where his expertise was highly sought after.
