US Presidential Elections Inspire Me about Our Dreams for a Greater Nigeria Ahead – Akande

Former Presidential Aide Laolu Akande says Nigeria’s future can be inspired by the upcoming US Presidential Elections.

Former US College professor Akande revealed this in a tweet on Wednesday in response to the remarks given at the Democratic Party convention that is now taking place in Chicago.

“The US Democratic Party convention hots up last night in Chicago with the Second Gentleman speaking on who Kamala is, & the Obamas doing what they know best: inspiring hope, and this time duelling Trump to the ground!”, Akande noted.

Akande, who spent 17 years in the United States and covered several presidential elections during his time as a journalist with several newspapers including Philadelphia Inquirer, shared his deep admiration for the American electoral process.

He noted that his focus on this year’s race is not just about the political drama unfolding in the US, but also about the possibilities it opens up for Nigeria.

“Having lived 17 years straight in the US and covered several presidential polls, my focus on this year’s race to the White House is powered by the imagination of what is also possible in our Nigeria,” Akande tweeted. “Those of us who envision the dream would not relent.”

The seasoned journalist, who was the first African to interview a sitting US President at the White House, drew comparisons between the American experience and his goals for Nigeria.

He emphasized the need for continuous efforts to realize a greater Nigeria. He likened the journey to that of the biblical Nehemiah, who led the rebuilding of Jerusalem’s walls amidst opposition and criticism.

Akande’s commitment to Nigeria’s future is evident in his work, both in and out of public service. He noted that it is this very belief in the nation’s potential that led to the creation of the #InsideSources program on Channels TV.

He said “It’s the reason we started #InsideSources only on Channels TV. It’s the reason we believe in Nigeria in and out of public service.”

“There would be tonnes of naysayers & hurling of what not,” Akande wrote, acknowledging the inevitable pushback that comes with advocating for change. However, he remained steadfast, urging others to join in the collective effort to achieve a better Nigeria. “It would only encourage us that our destination is valuable. Let’s do it together, y’all!”

Recall that prior to Akande serving as presidential media aide from 2015 to 2023, he handled high-profile media project including communication consultant to the United Nations and the New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD).
