U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris accepted the Democratic presidential nomination in Chicago on Thursday, addressing a cheering crowd at the Democratic National Convention (DNC). Harris, who made history as the first Black woman to be nominated by a major U.S. party for the presidency, promised a “new way forward” for the country.
Speaking to thousands of energized supporters at the United Center, Harris emphasized unity, urging Americans to move beyond past divisions and work together for a better future. “With this election, our nation has a precious, fleeting opportunity to move past the bitterness, cynicism, and divisive battles of the past — a chance to chart a new way forward,” Harris said, followed by a roar of approval from the audience.
The event marked a pivotal moment for Harris, who had previously been an afterthought in U.S. politics but now finds herself leading the Democratic Party after President Joe Biden’s decision not to seek reelection. The convention hall erupted in patriotic chants and flag-waving as Harris took the stage, with pop star Pink and country group The Chicks providing musical performances to celebrate the occasion.
Harris was joined on stage by her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, as they were greeted with applause and surrounded by balloons in red, white, and blue.
Harris used the opportunity to appeal to voters across political divides, focusing on issues such as economic opportunity and protecting personal freedoms, especially regarding reproductive rights. She declared, “I will be a president who unites us around our highest aspirations.”
Taking aim at her Republican rival, former President Donald Trump, Harris criticized his vision for the country, warning that a second Trump term would pull the nation backward. She contrasted her leadership, grounded in her experiences as the daughter of a single mother and a career prosecutor, with Trump’s self-serving actions. Harris also targeted Trump’s foreign policies, criticizing his relationships with authoritarian figures like Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In terms of foreign policy, Harris expressed strong support for Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia and promised to support NATO allies. On the issue of Israel and Gaza, Harris pushed for a ceasefire and vowed to work for “self-determination” for Palestinians, a stance that resonated with many at the convention.
Former President Barack Obama also praised Harris during the event, stating that she was “ready on day one to be President and represents the best of America.” President Biden echoed these sentiments, expressing confidence in Harris’s leadership.
