Chelsea Football Club’s £89 million signing, Mykhailo Mudryk, is facing challenges in his development, according to the club’s manager, Enzo Maresca. The Ukrainian winger, who joined Chelsea in 2023, has struggled to consistently perform at the expected level, and Maresca recently spoke out about what he believes is the primary issue holding the player back: his decision-making in critical moments.
In a post-match interview following Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Servette in the UEFA Conference League play-offs on Thursday, Maresca opened up about Mudryk’s difficulties and the ongoing efforts to improve his performance. Maresca noted that the 23-year-old winger, while possessing obvious technical skill, often makes poor choices when it matters most—particularly in the attacking third of the field.
“I think this is Misha, this is Mudryk, in terms of not only tonight, but in terms of since he joined the club,” Maresca said.
Maresca highlighted that one of Mudryk’s biggest challenges is not necessarily his technical ability, but rather his consistency in making the right decisions. In particular, Mudryk’s struggles seem to emerge in the final third, the part of the pitch where decisive actions can make or break an attack.
“This is Misha. If he can become more consistent, he can take one step forward. We are going to try and help him change,” the manager said.
